夢二は子ども絵の題材や書籍装幀などで、鳥類・魚類・昆虫も含む動物をしばしば描きました。

また、デザインワークにおいても、動物のモチーフは重要なインスピレーションの一つになっており、各々の動物にみる顔立ちやシルエットなど、特徴をたくみに引き出して図案化しています。とくにブックデザインで取り上げる場合は、書物の有する難解なイメージを払拭させて、動物の持つ親しみやすさを強調しました。

時には動物を擬人化することもありました。洋服を着せて二足歩行をするような人間の姿で描写し、カラフルな色彩で画面を彩って、遊び心にあふれた表現も多く試みました。 ★★★ Yumeji often drew animals, including birds, fish, and insects, as subjects for his children's drawings and book covers.

Animal motifs were also an important source of inspiration for his design work, and he skillfully brought out the distinctive features of each animal, such as their facial features and silhouettes, and created designs for them. Particularly when featuring animals in book designs, he tried to dispel the incomprehensible image of books and emphasize the familiarity of animals.

Sometimes he anthropomorphized animals. He depicted them as human-like creatures walking on two legs, dressed them in Western clothing, and decorated his paintings with colorful colors, often attempting to create expressions full of playfulness.
