白蓮も多用した夢二の絵封筒

和紙に木版色刷りによって多彩な図案があしらわれた封筒を、＜絵封筒＞といいますが、夢二は情趣あふれるデザインを数多く作りました。

その図案は草花、小動物、京名所を題材にとり、夢二による江封筒はシンプルかつ淡い色使いで仕上げられたものが多くみられます。

絵封筒は、郵便で使用されるだけはでなく、綺麗な柄で多数制作されていたため、コレクションする人も多かったそうです。

ところで、福岡の炭坑王・伊藤伝右衛門に嫁いだ歌人の柳原白蓮（本名：燁子（あきこ））は、主婦としての力を夫から認められなかったことなどから、結婚９年目で出会った東京帝大学生で若き社会運動家であった宮崎龍介と恋愛関係となりました。二人は東京・九州間で２年間に７００通もの恋文を交わしたとのこと。そこには夢二の絵封筒がたくさん使われていました。白蓮は夢二グッズの大ファンだったのですね。ちなみに、白蓮の処女作『蹈絵（ふみえ）』は夢二の装幀によるものでした。 ★★★ Envelopes decorated with colorful designs printed on washi paper using woodblock printing are called "picture envelopes," and Yumeji created many designs full of charm.

The designs are based on flowers, small animals, and famous places in Kyoto, and Yumeji's picture envelopes are often finished in simple, pale colors.

Picture envelopes were not only used for mailing, but many were produced with beautiful designs, so many people collected them.

By the way, the poet Yanagiwara Byakuren (real name: Akiko), who married Fukuoka's coal mining magnate Ito Den-emon, was not recognized by her husband for her abilities as a housewife, and nine years after her marriage she fell in love with Miyazaki Ryusuke, a young social activist and student at Tokyo Imperial University. The two exchanged 700 love letters between Tokyo and Kyushu over a two-year period. Many of them used Yumeji's picture envelopes. Byakuren was a big fan of Yumeji goods. Incidentally, Byakuren's debut book, Fumie, was designed by Yumeji.
